Nowadays “Speaking clubs” are becoming more and more popular. A lot of people chose them because they are not only a great way to develop language skills but also a way to meet new people! However, not all speaking clubs are helpful. In this article I would like to introduce some of the important factors that the clubs need to have to be effective.
- In order to gain the best out of the speaking club, it is important that a native speaker will hold it. If so, you will be able to listen to a native speech and get used to their accent. Most of the clubs have few native speakers that rotate weekly; therefore you will get a chance to communicate with teachers from different countries. As a result you will be more successful in understanding different people.
- Different levels of people. Even though you might think that it is a large disadvantage, when people with different levels of language are talking, I can reassure that there are massive advantages of this situation. Speaking to people with different levels will not only help you to understand them but also may improve your grammar skills! When listening to someone speaking better than you are, you learn from them. But how can you learn from lower levels? Well, when you are listening to their speech you will notice their mistakes and learn from them too! So in conclusion, not only teacher has an affect on how much you learn but also other students from the group!
- Structure of the lesson. Everybody learns differently. Some people prefer to listen however some are into doing. In order to find what fits you the best, I would advice you to try different speaking clubs and see what style of learning you like the best. At Sun Rise we get our students involved as much as we can therefore there is a lot of pair and group work where they are able to share their ideas firstly with their group and then with the whole class! Due to this their ideas are more structured and they feel more confident in sharing them with everyone else.
The best way to find out what fits you the best is to visit different speaking clubs and to chose the one that you think will be the most effective to you and the one you have enjoyed! Because at the end of the day Speaking Clubs are made for people not to only learn a language but also to relax and to communicate with other people! .
So if you are thinking of joining a Speaking Club, why not come and try the one at Sun Rise?
