Have you ever had a thought that studying languages is actually not your cup of tea and you have no skills or talent for it? When I started teaching I was always asking myself why. Why some students are so effective while others are so slow in their progress towards English? After several years teaching, I firmly believe that the language talent can be developed and improved by everyone. Although we are all unique in out learning styles, personal features and inclinations, there are definite steps that are essential for being a SUCCESSFUL ENGLISH LEARNER.
1. They are in love with the language.
Many people get frustrated or tired already after the first couple of attempts. They simply give up while blaming boring grammar books, conservative or too modern methods and amateurish teachers. Yes, it would take long and painful if you didn’t love what you do. Successful learners put their hearts in the language not just because English is important nowadays and you can have a good job and salary, but owing to their desire and passion to get more knowledge, to deep into another culture and be a part of it.
2. They are responsible and have strong habits.
It’s a question of attitude. Successful learners know that being good at anything requires a habit to practice and study it every day constantly. Now you can find lots of programs and clubs that promise you a quick result, innovative teaching and a large number of resources. But if you are a successful learner, you must understand that only what you do comes back to you. Practice makes perfect, especially if it comes naturally as a part of your daily routine. Remember that it takes four-six weeks for a habit to become constant.
3. They risk and fail.
Successful learners are never afraid of making mistakes or being embarrassed. Don’t take your errors so seriously and learn to laugh at awkward situations. Moreover, if you don’t make any mistakes, it means you do something in a wrong way. Don’t wait to get enough knowledge to start speaking and just do it right now!
4. They know their way to do it.
Of course you can never be interested one hundred percent and that is why you always need to experiment and grow. Don’t force yourself to study new vocabulary or grammar structures. You should accept that as it is and find the way that doesn’t have a pressure on you (books, videos, talking to friends or just listening to your favorite songs). Make boring tasks joyful and you will never be pressed to do what is so important for you.
5. They feel like a part of its culture.
It’s not a secret that language is not only a set of words and phrases. It is also an expression of culture, history and people’s inside world. Be a successful learner and try to read the news from the country of your favorite language. If you have an opportunity – visit the place which is connected with your studying, if not – watch a historical film or just flick through the traditional pictures while surfing the net. It will give you a great motivation to continue with more energy and efforts!
All in all, successful learners are always surrounded by the language in their real life. Of course they accept help from their mentors, teachers and friends but they always remember that if you want a success, you are not allowed to give excuses because they do not talk together.
SUCCESS is not only dreaming but working on it!
